Sylvia’s CAC now hiring for a part-time Victim Advocate

Sylvia’s CAC provides a child-friendly, trauma-informed, multidisciplinary response to allegations of child abuse. The Victim Advocate supports children and non-offending caregivers through crisis intervention, education, resource navigation, and ongoing case coordination. This is a grant-funded position and is renewable annually based on funding allocation. 

FLSA Status: Non-exempt (hourly)
Reports to: Executive Director
Location: Onsite
Schedule: Part-time (20 hours per week) occasional evenings/weekends for on-call, crisis response, or court appearances

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide immediate, trauma-informed crisis intervention, safety planning, and emotional support to child victims and non-offending caregivers before/during/after forensic interviews and medical exams.
  • Explain MDT/CAC processes, victims’ rights, court procedures, and available services; offer warm referrals with handoffs (mental health, medical, legal, housing, transportation).
  • Conduct follow-up contacts to monitor safety, service engagement, and well-being; document services and outcomes in case-management systems.
  • Coordinate closely with the MDT (law enforcement, DCS, prosecution, medical, mental health) while protecting client confidentiality and privileged communications.
  • Accompany caregivers/children to hearings as appropriate; prepare victim impact/support materials in collaboration with the MDT.
  • Participate in case review/MDT meetings; present advocacy updates and remove service barriers.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete records compliant with funding (e.g., VOCA), accreditation (NCA), and audit standards.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for after-hours response.
  • Perform other duties as assigned consistent with the role.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social services, psychology, public health, or related field**
    • In lieu of degree, this position may allow for internship hours toward a position-relevant degree
  • 1–2 years of experience working with children and families (nonprofit or advocacy experience preferred)
  • Strong communication, empathy, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a trauma-informed team

Screening & Legal Requirements: 

  • Must pass a comprehensive background check prior to start and at required intervals, including: fingerprint-based national/state criminal history, Child Protective Services (CPS) history, National Sex Offender Registry, and local court record checks.  
  • Mandatory Reporter: All persons in Indiana must immediately report suspected child abuse/neglect. Training provided at hire.  
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and acceptable motor-vehicle record if duties require travel.

Working Conditions: 

  • Work is performed in an office/child-friendly environment with periods of sitting/standing; occasional lifting up to 25 lbs. (files/supplies).
  • Frequent use of computer and phone; occasional travel to partner sites and courts.
